Marine and Fisheries

The sea is important to Scotland - approximately one fifth of Scotland's population lives within a kilometre of it, it generates in excess of £2.2 billion and provides 50,000 jobs.

Marine Scotland, the Scottish Government's champion of the seas in Scotland, is responsible for our marine and coastal environments and has a vision of having seas and coasts which are clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse.

By looking after our coast and seas we can ensure that they meet the long term needs of nature and people.

Scotland's Marine Bill received Royal Assent on 10 March 2010, making it the Marine (Scotland) Act. This marks a major turning point in safeguarding the future of Scotland seas and laying the foundations for a more simplified marine planning and licensing system.
