Scotland in the World

Friday, November 30, 2007

First Minister Alex SalmondAberdeen University has just set up a 'Scotland in the World' Forum to consider our country's global standing and global potential.

I was invited to deliver the inaugural lecture and I was delighted to explain how the Forum will be a major part of the wider National Conversation which is about the kind of country Scotland wishes to be - and the changes that must be made to meet our ambitions.

I talked about independence and interdependence and why this Government looks to Ireland and the Nordic countries - the Arc of Prosperity around us - as working models of what can be achieved in the modern global economy if Scotland had the same powers and freedoms that these countries take for granted.

I said that Scotland's interdependence is a fact. We have a strong economic relationship with the rest of the UK, our EU partners, and beyond.

And, I argued, it is precisely because we live in an interdependent world that independence matters.

King's College, Aberdeen UniversityThe choice for Scotland is clear. We can choose to remain a bit player - unable to advance our interests other than through the UK. Alternatively, as an independent country, we can actively seek responsibility, eager to help shape the great global debates on the environment, on trade, on poverty, on the emergence of new economies.

For me, Scottish independence is not just an opportunity to move Scotland forward, but a chance for Scotland to give something back, to meet our global responsibilities. I want Scotland to be a leader in international conflict resolution, building on the tremendous sense of goodwill towards our nation across the globe.

Scotland is considering its position in a world of close and ever-growing economic interdependence. We benefit greatly from co-operation but that does not obviate the huge economic rewards for countries that are innovative and flexible and pursuing the right economic strategy, and a clear and distinct set of interests.

That is why this Government believes that now, more than ever, Scotland stands to benefit from full independence.

Well, well, well Mr MacAskill has been allowed into the daylight again.

Let’s see what words of wisdom he has had to offer in the past.

    (a) We are responsible adults and should be allowed to have a drink at the home of Scottish rugby, namely Murrayfield, and allow SIX licences for selling alcohol at the venue!

    (b) Scotland has a drink problem so we are going to put a stop to BOGOF deals in supermarkets.
    (c) Scotland has a drink problem so we are going to make those people who sell booze in bars pay for the damage.
    (d) The British Transport Police are a disgrace, they stop and search people they suspect could be terrorists carrying bombs. Ridiculous, they should follow the example of the Scottish Police forces that don’t have enough men to search anybody anywhere. A much better strategy.
    (e) Now apparently the prisons are full of the wrong people!!

So far (a) is worthwhile considering the performance of the current rugby squad; at least supporters can drown their sorrows until we win again. (Next game I hope)

    (b) Why not just cancel the 24 hour vending license for selling booze and reduce the hours of sale, and only if they meet the requirement of selling at a profit?
    (c) Actually increasing the cost of license fees to the drinks trade only puts up the price of booze in a reasonably social environment and encourages young drinkers to get ‘blitzed’ before they go out, using cheap booze from (b)!!!
    (d) No Answer to this one other than the middle eastern follower of Islam who works for Heathrow security who admits he ‘clocks’ middle eastern followers of Islam when he is on duty because that’s the profile of ALL the bombers to date. Stupid person? I think not.
    (e) Well Kenny lad you are in GOVERNMENT, so you claim so why don’t you identify all these poor put upon young citizens who are falsely incarcerated and let them free on program of rehabilitation? I suspect like your bosses refusal to stop letting young thugs into the community to commit further mayhem you may have difficulty separating out the deserving from the malcontents.

Stop moaning and get on with the job. We will judge you on results, not verbiage.

I am not advocating any of the points you made, merely pointing out that avoiding the debates that effect OUR day to day lives by bringing up irrevalavences such as those listed will not serve the purpose.

The case hase to be made on merit not invective.

I think Scotland would be better served by those other than the posturing malcontents we are presented with on a daily basis.

Talk to the people not the press.

I have voted SNP all my eligible life. As a separate European Nation I believe Scotland can succeed. I used to misinterperate my emotional bond with Scotland as anti English. However this is not the case. England is just as beautiful a country and the people are fine ( I worked down south for 15 years ). This is not about creating friction but I believe the next generation has a superb opportunity to give full independence its head. The sooner the better ! Lets get some confidence in this country and if certain politicians waste time by flaunting the laws and getting away with it we must ask questions of the Westminister Government in power at the moment.

I am fed up of hearing scottish people saying "i wana be independent coz it will say i'm scottish on my passport...blah blah blah.."

the reason for independence is not for stupid reasons like that...yeah i would love to have written on my documents that i'm scottish but the real reason we should have independence is for the growth of the greatest little country in the world...we have the abilty to export so many things that the uk goverment rake the tax in off of....imagine that money being put straight into scotland...for a better future....if we became independent we would have to start our own armed forces....so what...we have enough soldiers and regiments here to make that...the reason england and the uk government prosper so much is to do with the growth and export of scotland....not many people actually relise this fact....i could keep going on but that would make me a politician.....

Scotland won't even get a referendum on independence as long as there are more unionist MSPs in Parliament, so although the idea is nice I think it is best to look to 2011 and see if the Parliament changes in favour of the SNP.

    For Chris no.19
For your information we are already in the EU it happened over thirty years ago,do you actualy know anything about current affairs? So at the minute we have to go through London to speak to Brussels, independence means we can cut out the middle man. Simple.

Is the Union of 1707 still legal, as i have read through the articles of union and many have been broken over the years surely a good legal mind could take this to court! Does it still deserve the Scottish peoples respect when so many of the articles of union have been breached. Even simple things like the present Queen should be Elizabeth 1 of Great Britain not 2 as she is styled( for any reader not sure what i'm meaning here read a history book, it micht dae ye some guid!)
Why should we respect the union and the British state if it doesn't respect us.

Since the election I have felt an overwhelming sense of optimism. We now have a government that will put Scotland's interests first and aren't beholden to westminster. There is also the very real possibility of independence, something i would vote for in a heartbeat.

I hope that the SNP's time in government will show the people of Scotland how good things could be if we were independent. Keeping the positive message and never being negative like unionists, labour in particular.
