Introduction

What is the Futures Project?

FuturesIt is an ambitious programme of work that is helping to assess some of the key challenges and opportunities that Scotland might face over the next 20 years or so. Its purpose is to stimulate debate and to help ensure that all the aspects of government activity work effectively together to best position Scotland for the future.

Scotland's devolved government is already undertaking forward-looking work - in health, transport, planning, education and other areas. The Futures Project is different because for the first time it examines systematically current strengths and weaknesses - and likely future opportunities and challenges - across key areas of Scottish life and society.

What it is not.

The Futures Project is not about predicting Scotland's future. We cannot predict with certainty what will happen before it does.

Instead, based on the existing evidence, the Futures Project aims to suggest some possibilities for the future. It invites everyone to consider the evidence, assess the options for action and to contribute to the debate about how to shape Scotland's future.
