Directorate for Criminal Justice is headed by Valerie MacNiven and its responsibilities include a range of areas:

  • Policy on community sentences and community supervision of adult offenders, including drug misusing offenders, women and young offenders
  • Planning, funding and the framework for delivering local authority criminal justice social work services
  • Electronic monitoring services
  • Managing risk posed by sex offenders in the community
  • Policy and operation of the pilot drug and youth courts
  • Promoting Effective Practice Agenda for criminal justice social work

It is structured into five divisions including:

  • Criminal Procedure
  • Criminal Law and Licensing
  • Parole & Life Setence Review
  • Community Justice Services
  • Victims and Witnesses
