Discussion on whether junk food has a place as part of a healthy, balanced diet

burger and chipsRoddy Mungall says: We need to get smart about all this and rather than reaching a point where we tell people that this, that or the next thing is bad for us, it would be better to take a positive approach and take about a proportionate approach. By that I mean that we need to enable people to strike a balance and to make good choices about food. Even junk food is food, but it really does depend whether or not it dominates or is, as I would regard it, a treat.

This issue will resolve when people stop calling junk food/ fast food a TREAT!!!!!! As our kids grow up they learn that TREATS are something special, something one one works for, something they get if they are good. As they start to be able to afford their own TREATS they realise how cheap the junk food treat is, instant comfort based on a childhood perception. And so we watch the nation eating TREATS on a daily basis. and the result......

I work in kilwinning and at lunchtime I see the children coming from the chip shop with chips and cheese or sauce. I lived in America in the 1980s and I saw children becoming very over weight and eating lots of McDonalds and KFC or Pizza Hut. I see that happening even more here now. I am all for having a treat but not every day. I choose to spend my money on other things more important. If everyone was to count up how much money was spent in chip shops or other fast food outlets I think they would be shocked how much they could save if they took their lunch to school or work. Also everyone would know what they are eating then and not be at the mercy of other people or compamies who are trying to make money out of them, putting ingredients in the food that are unhealthy. I also think that people just eat food and do not think what they are putting in their bodies and the effect of the food they are eating. Call me an old fuddy duddy but there is nothing better that a good bowl of home made soup and sandwich that you have made yourself. Maybe if there was more money put into education to teach people to cook healthy (and I do not mean just children there are adults out there who do not know how to cook) then peoples health would improve.

Perhaps the issue is less about the food choices available and more about our cultural attitude to food? In a cash-rich and time-poor culture, it is no longer common-place to spend several hours of the day cooking and eating. With the focus on work and crazy working hours that we do in this country, it is hardly surprising!
Working shorter, but more productive hours with time to spend cooking/eating/sharing with families and friends would I'm sure mean less "treats" at MacDonalds and more healthy home-cooked meals!

I agree to some degree with what Roddy Mungall says about people needing to be able to strike a balance and to make good choices about food. The problem is that the majority of adults are perfectly aware-from television programmes, and other forms of media that eating junk food on a regular basis is extremely unhealthy yet it is still consumed on a regular basis by many. I disagree with Roddy Mungall on the fact that we should not be telling people “that this, that or the next thing is bad for us”. There is plenty of awareness and information available on healthy eating yet people still choose to eat unhealthily rather than cook a meal that will not take much longer than a microwave meal to cook, and will be more nutritious. America are beginning to place large signs on a lot of food bought-especially in fast food restaurants stating clearly the calorie content next to the recommended daily allowance. This shock tactic will hopefully make people realise exactly how potentially unhealthy and fattening the food they are consuming is, and think differently and in a more positive manner towards food next time they decide to eat. We also should be realising that children need to be taught about the importance of a balanced diet so their attitude to food in the future is hopefully a positive a healthy one-unlike many adults today.

In scotland there are many fast food shops on every corner and many supermarkets. As per the junk foods are conserned its not good food for the healthier life those who eat on the daily basis. we all know that people of scotland goes towards the junk food because they don't get time out of work to cook food for themselfs and their family. But its not a sign of good health to the whole society.the junk foods create obesity , heart diseases because of fatty acids percentage is more.AS per my openion if a person serious about their health he / she should create a healthy lifestyle by involving themselves in exercise in regularly basis as well as eating healthy fresh cooked food..or home made food. This will make a healthy society and a safer place of scotland.

Hi, regarding fast foods I think its not good for health on a daily basis. For having a Healthy food, it should have a balance diet in it. Fast food can provide very tasty and tempting food but not a balance diet. I think people should go for a fast food for a change or when they are running short of time.

People who are eating burgers and pizzas on a daily basis can suffer from many health problems, their immune system can change, they gain more of fat in body which can even decrease the functioning of Red Blood Cells and White Blood cell because of which the body cannot fight with many virus and infects.

So, I personally feel that one should not go to fast foods on daily basis. Remember " Prevention is better than Cure !!!"

We were taught how to make cheese on toast at school, and it utterly disgusting it was too. Equipped with this vital and lasting life skill, is it any wonder I frequently turned to fast food?
